In a Heartbeat: The short that went viral in a week

If you’ve not watched the LGBT short ‘In a Heartbeat’ by graduates Beth David, 22, and Esteban Bravo, 24, make it the top of your to-do right now lists. Released just in time for the UK’s celebrations of gay pride, the animation has had over 23 million views on YouTube in less than two weeks, and the hits are still increasing (which, to be honest, is quite easy to see why).

The short follows Sherwin, a shy character who seemingly likes to keep to himself. However, when Sherwin catches a glimpse of his schoolmate Jonathan, his heart can’t contain itself and chases after his newly sought-after crush. The film is simple yet heart-warming, and has sent the internet into a frenzy over how well the short explains the LGBTQIAA+ mantra ‘love is love’.

The film took around 18 months to create in total, and the pair knew it was going to be a hit after campaigning to raise $3,000 for the cost of production. Instead, it received an overwhelming total of $14,000. After watching the film and dying to know what happens next, some keen fans have even reached out to Disney, begging them to make it into a feature-length film.

Beth and Esteban have both graduated this year from Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida, having studied Computer Animation. The short was initially created for their Senior Thesis, and was previewed by the College this spring at the 2017 Best of Ringling Awards & Exhibitions. Whilst the two have had a lot of quizzing as to what’s next for them, as well as being contacted by numerous companies with offers of jobs, they’re keeping their cards close to their chest and seem to be riding the wave of online fame for a while.
